History

Created by the earth eons ago to punish man for defiling the earth; Battra was awakened in 1992 and broke out of its resting place under the polar ice caps. Battra fights for the Earth (and against all its enemies, including mankind), and will come to the planet’s defense against environmental threats.

In its caterpillar (or larva) form, it is able to swim, burrow underground, and emit purplish prism beams from both its horn and eyes. Eventually, however, the caterpillar transforms into a deadly flying form, much like Mothra. In this form, the powerful monster fought Godzilla to a standstill until both were swallowed by an undersea volcanic eruption.

Battra survived this dunking into the Earth’s magma, emerging with no apparant damage to transform into its winged adult form. Convinced by Mothra that Godzilla is by far the greatest threat to the planet’s ecology, the adult Battra then teamed up with its erstwhile foe to fight the Monster King in the middle of Yokohama’s Minato Mirai 21 theme park where it apparently was killed.

The promise Mothra made to Battra was to take on Battra’s task of preventing the destruction of the Earth, should Battra not survive. At the end of the film, Mothra leaves Earth to fulfill this promise.
